The Rhône

The Rhône

The Rhône begins in the Swiss Alps and flows through Lake Geneva into France. The river will ultimately meet the Mediterranean Sea.

Historically the Rhône River was a vital part of the mighty Roman Empire and many ruins and evidence of the Roman presence are visible throughout the river journey, including aqueducts, Roman baths, arches and theatres.

One of the great charms of the Rhône is that many of the places you will visit on your cruise retain much of the medieval charm. It also flows through the heart of Provence, the great French region of Cezanne, Renoir and Matisse, as well as the local liqueure, Pastis. The principal ports of call are the UNESCO World Heritage city of Lyon, Vienne, Tournon, Viviers, Arles and Avignon, the latter being known as the City of Popes and the gateway to Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Most voyages sail from Avignon to Lyon, or reverse, but many also include the Saone as well, including the great wine regions of Burgundy and more great wineries to visit!
